HEADLESS FRONTEND & AUTOMATION
A central medium for brand communication that convinces at every touchpoint internationally: This was the goal pursued by the fashion brand OLYMP with the redesign of its online store. With a comprehensive redesign, valantic gave the digital flagship store a modern look and created a future-proof framework with a headless architecture in order to react quickly to new customer needs. An automation solution brings even more speed and efficiency to the development of new markets.

Specialized in the manufacturing and distribution of high-quality men’s fashion, the fashion brand OLYMP combines the classic business world with the modern lifestyle of our millennium. With a clear commitment to traditional values and timeless design, the brand meets the individual needs and preferences of its customers. Since its founding in 1951, the owner-managed company from Bietigheim-Bissingen has continuously expanded its portfolio and established itself in the European market. In addition to collaborating with specialty and retail stores, the company has been increasingly focusing on online sales for several years in order to reach a larger target group and offer its customers a modern, flexible shopping experience. Quality, a contemporary look-and-feel and personalized experiences are also a priority in OLYMP’s e-commerce.
The challenge
OLYMP approached valantic with the task of comprehensively modernizing the existing B2C store by redesigning the front end, with a focus on developing a modern UX design.
In order to create a consistent brand experience at all touchpoints, OLYMP pursued a holistic approach that encompasses all sales activities in an omnichannel context, both online and in-store. As the central platform for brand communication, the redesigned store was to offer better user experiences and enable seamless customer experiences through emotional appeal and high usability on all devices. Specifically, the redesign of the digital flagship store was associated with measurable goals to increase website traffic and boost conversion rates and sales opportunities through a seamless customer experience (CX).
Perspectively, internationalization and rollout in additional markets were also considered. To position itself for the future in e-commerce and gain more flexibility in implementing new requirements, the idea of a headless architecture was considered.
The solution
With these objectives, valantic began revising the existing store system in May 2023. In the initial phase, the focus was on consulting and coordinating the possible design and technical implementation of the new frontend solution. Following valantic’s recommendation, the choice was made for the SAP Composable Storefront framework (formerly Spartacus). Considering that the existing shop was already built on the SAP Commerce Cloud backend (formerly Hybris), implementing the SAP frontend framework was the most obvious and efficient step.
Following the relaunch of the new OLYMP store in March 2024, the project team developed an automation solution that enabled a fast, efficient rollout in other markets. This ensured that the modernized store system went live in Switzerland, one of the fashion retailer’s most important export markets, at the beginning of 2025.
The SAP Composable Storefront, a JavaScript application, is the core of the new headless architecture. This open-source framework for the SAP Commerce Cloud makes it possible to create highly scalable and customizable e-commerce frontends without needing to make changes to the core system. As the headless frontend is separate from the backend logic of the e-commerce architecture, it offers a high degree of adaptability and scalability. Dev teams can easily extend the user interface with new features – a significant advantage for the brand in order to react quickly to new customer needs and continue to offer user-optimized experiences in the future. The decoupled framework based on the web technology Angular also contributes to the stability and performance of the system.
To support individual brand and product presentations, the project team integrated the content management system (CMS) SmartEdit. This is a JavaScript overlay over the customer view that simplifies editing page content and context-based personalization through drag-and-drop actions, among other things. Content such as product images, descriptions or videos can be easily created, optimized for different devices and played out contextually. Another plus: The CMS, based on Angular architecture, is also easily extendable and adapts to the brand’s requirements.
The revised UX design plays a key role in the appealing online presentation and the consistent brand experience at OLYMP. The online store has been optimized for mobile devices and now allows intuitive navigation on all devices through responsive design. In addition to the clean user interface, the visual design focuses on large-format motifs and inspirational elements that accompany customers throughout the entire customer journey. Optimized filter functions also contribute to usability, allowing users to find suitable products more accurately.
As a large part of the e-commerce logic in the original store system was built into the front end, the project team transferred necessary and useful applications to the backend. Both these optimizations and the ongoing maintenance of the SAP Commerce Cloud contribute to more efficient processes in the long term.
Because the online store is designed for different sales markets, the project team set up several stores in four languages (German, Dutch, French, English) and corresponding currencies. Besides Germany and Austria, OLYMP currently also sells in Luxembourg, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
The new automation solution increases the speed and efficiency of setting up future stores in additional markets. With Impex templates, which are generated and executed as automatic tasks (so-called cron jobs), all store settings (including in the back office) can be selected and easily managed.
Development work and content testing went hand in hand during the implementation of the Swiss store. Together, concrete requirements were specified and documented in the form of user stories with clearly defined acceptance criteria.
valantic will continue to closely collaborate with OLYMP and, in addition to maintaining the e-commerce systems, will also be responsible for their further development in the future. Among other things, the Move-to-Cloud of the B2C store is currently under discussion, as well as the integration of new applications and features, such as additional payment options.
