50% more speed for the Cybertrading webshop

it-market.com runs faster than ever before

Within just a few days, hardware specialist Cybertrading, in cooperation with valantic, significantly increased the speed of its webshop: 48 percent faster response times, lower server utilization and reliable availability are the results of targeted server configurations and optimizations of the existing Shopware system. After successful collaboration and documentation, Cybertrading’s IT team will be able to ensure optimum performance of the store on its own in future.

About Cybertrading

Founded in Magdeburg in 2007, Cybertrading GmbH has developed into a globally active distributor. The company offers refurbished, quality-assured network technology via its own B2C and B2B store it-market.com. With over 145,000 products from 400 manufacturers and comprehensive service for more than 29,000 customers worldwide, Cybertrading sets standards in IT refurbishment.

The challenge

Why quick action was required

Originally available on marketplaces like Amazon and eBay, the growing product range found a new home on it-market.com in 2015. After nine years of steady company and portfolio growth, the store was extensively revised in April 2024, updated with security enhancements and adapted to growing user needs.

However, after the relaunch and the simultaneous migration from Shopware 5 to the new Shopware 6.4, performance issues occurred, resulting in long loading times, high server utilization and increased shopping cart abandonment. Quick action was required: Cybertrading was looking for a partner to solve the problem as immediately and sustainably as possible.

The solution

To improve the performance of the webshop, the project team pursued an iterative and consistently cooperative approach. The DevOps and QA experts from valantic analyzed the server load and Shopware configurations, identified problems, advised on possible solutions and implemented targeted DevOps and backend measures.

Key elements of the collaboration

Documentation & knowledge exchange

Enablement was the order of the day: To remain independent in the long term, the problems identified in each iteration were documented in detail, discussed with Cybertrading’s IT team and checked for traceability. A Teams channel was set up for efficient communication and quick clarification of queries. Instructions for changes and configurations made by valantic on the staging system were recorded in Confluence.

Performance difficulties related to the code or the implementation were also transparently itemized. This seamless documentation enabled the Cybertrading team to fully understand the problems as well as the adjustments made and possible solutions and to retain information sovereignty over all configurations.

Consulting

For application performance management (APM), valantic recommended the use of the APM system Tideways. The tool measures relevant performance metrics of PHP systems, making successes over time comprehensible. For example, it can be checked how quickly requests to individual pages are answered and what errors occur.

DevOps & backend development

The identified and prioritized problems were initially fixed by valantic and later by Cybertrading itself, with successes measured via Tideways. valantic integrated three central tools to increase the performance of the Shopware system and optimize data exchange:

Redis

The in-memory data storage is used for fast data processing and saving. Even with large, unstructured data volumes, Redis ensures very short access times and contributes to high performance and scalability of the systems. The service is used in e-commerce for caching information valid over a longer period.

ElasticSearch

The powerful search and analysis solution enables fast processing and querying of large data volumes. The service is particularly suitable in e-commerce for searching and aggregating extensive databases (e.g. product catalogs) and therefore serves as the technical basis for full-text search and product filtering.

RabbitMQ

The messaging broker takes over the distribution of actions within a system, allowing tasks not immediately needed to be executed asynchronously and in parallel in the background. This leads to a significant increase in application performance.

What's next?

Optimization is an ongoing development topic for Cybertrading. In the course of the collaboration, the company identified further potentials of its webshop, which will be jointly addressed in the coming months. The valantic Academy will support the Cybertrading team initially with Shopware training.
