Total Cost of Ownership

The concept of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) describes the determination of all costs incurred in connection with a purchased product or service. The consideration includes both initial expenses for the purchase or acquisition as well as recurring, additional costs for operation and maintenance. The concept was developed by Gartner specifically for the IT environment: here, the total costs can relate to hardware and software or even complete systems and digital infrastructures. There is no standardized model for calculating TCO. Common concepts follow a best-practice approach that relates to the respective area of application. A distinction can be made between direct costs (e.g. purchase price, training costs, subscription, maintenance and license fees) and indirect costs (e.g. opportunity costs due to unavailability as well as work and production downtime during a malfunction or problem solution).
