Digital accessibility means that digital offerings are accessible and usable for all people, regardless of their physical and mental abilities. Implementation encompasses visual aspects of user interface design (e.g., sufficient contrast and font sizes) as well as requirements for functionality and usability (e.g., keyboard operability). With the implementation of the European Accessibility Act (EAA) at the end of June 2025, private companies in all EU countries and Switzerland must meet specific requirements for the accessibility of their digital services. The cornerstones are the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which are based on four principles: perceivability, operability, understandability, and robustness. Although the EAA primarily targets the inclusion and digital participation of people with disabilities, compliance with the new guidelines offers broader potential for every online business.
