From Code to Canvas – how Matas is mastering image generation with artificial intelligence

Wenn Matas Pugžlys nicht gerade Code für neue generative KI-Projekte schreibt, genießt er gerne die Landschaft des Balkans.

Faces behind GenAI – Meet Matas

Frontend developer Matas Pugžlys is one of the more recent members of the GenAI Taskforce. He is specialized in Java Script and image generation, applying this knowledge in state-of-the-art AI projects. He is based in Kaunas, Lithuania.

How did you get into IT and specifically into Artificial Intelligence?

My father was an IT professional, a web administrator. He taught me a lot about computers at an early age. Later, I had my first programming experience and went to England to study Computer Science for my bachelor’s degree. I was already working in IT while I was studying, and when I finished, I got a job at Valantic as a frontend developer. When the AI boom started in 2022, I was so fascinated by it that I spent a lot of my free time studying and researching and delving into the whole topic of generative AI. I was particularly interested in image generation with GenAI. I am happy to be able to apply the knowledge I have gained to a current project.

What fascinated you about image generation?

Ever since I was little I always wanted to learn to draw – with GenAI I could skip the drawing part and go straight from imagination to images. Ever since the boom, I have been fascinated by how well GenAI could turn your imagination, your words, into images. I loved experimenting with the different models. It is great to see how you can tailor your images with different prompts. Lately I have been experimenting with cloud generation and modifying images of the Balkan countryside, especially the mountains. My favorite prompts are when I use different artistic styles, such as anime, realism, or a painter’s style, and apply them to my images.

How did you get into the GenAI taskforce and what is your role in it?

I am a frontend developer and mostly work with JavaScript. My colleague Kristina recommended me and a colleague to help with a recent project, the creation of our valantic internal chatbot, vally. I jumped in and helped with the frontend tasks. Now that we have the project up and running, I also specialize more in prompting and image generation within the taskforce. But I am still learning a lot as I have joined quite recently. Luckily, I have a wonderful team that really motivates me to keep improving and learning new things.

What do you need for a smooth workflow?

The most important thing is to get a good night’s sleep. If I sleep badly, it definitely has a negative impact on my concentration and productivity. And I like to have a to-do list for the day to keep me focused. Another thing that has helped me to de-stress, recharge and motivate myself since childhood and has been an integral part of my life is swimming. Unfortunately, I have fallen off the wagon a bit, but I would love to get back into it on a regular basis and start competing again. When I was at my prime in high school and university, I even competed in the Lithuanian Nationals. At the moment, when I can, I enjoy some of the beautiful lakes in the Lithuanian countryside – that’s where to find me when the weather is right.

Thank you for the insights and inspiring conversation, Matas!
